As part of an ongoing campaign of reissuing the band’s entire back catalog, OSMOSE PRODUCTIONS is proud to present the third album of Sweden’s BEWITCHED, At the Gates of Hell, on CD format again.
Formed in 1995 by erstwhile members of Katatonia, Naglfar, and Ancient Wisdom, Sweden’s BEWITCHED were a devilishly fun proposition for those members to blow off some steam. And from their debut album in 1996 onward for the next decade, the band stood at that forefront of the burgeoning blackthrash resurgence that would gain steam as the ‘90s went on.
Originally released in 1996, Encyclopedia of Evil was a fun all-covers EP that followed closely on the heels of BEWITCHED’s celebrated debut album, Diabolical Desecration. Totaling 25 minutes, here can you hear the band rip through reverential covers of Venom, Bathory, Mercyful Fate, Celtic Frost, and even Black Widow and concluding the record with the then-brand-new track “Hellcult.” Alternately, Hell Comes to Essen was released in 1998 following BEWITCHED’s celebrated second album, Pentagram Prayer, the year before. This raw ‘n’ bloody live album was recorded during 1997’s monumental World Domination Tour, which included then-labelmates Enslaved, Dark Tranquillity, Swordmaster, Dellamorte, and the pre-DragonForce Demoniac. Collected together for the first time ever, a wild ‘n’ indispensible collection!

Pretty much the best Black/Speed Metal I've listened to since I learned about Evil Invaders and Vulture. Everything you'd love to be reminded of about this musical era is there. The influences are what you'd expect too: Motörhead, Venom, Bathory, early Slayer, Celtic Frost; aggressive vocals, tortured guitar solos, pounding drums; everything is fast, clear and still a little grimy, but without reverb cranked up to the max. Amazing band, amazing album.

Jamais déçu, c'est encore du bon, du lourd, du technique... Le chant est toujours en retrait, mêlé au guitares sur-sollicitées, enivrantes et survoltées, s'entremêlant en envolées alambiquées ou lourdeurs pesantes, batterie en mode 12.7 à canon froid-constant (comprenne qui pourra 😂)... Bref... Rien à jeter, ceci est un bijou du début à la fin, qui arrive presque trop vite... Du moins, quand on est attentif, chapitre après chapitre, tranquille. Sinon en résumé : énergisant !! 🤘😂🤘
